Orange shoe flower and kids
Moon flower...The pride of my garden..
I just wanted this flower to head the line of flowers I am displaying in this blog. Moon flowers are the most beautiful flowers of my garden. At about 4.30pm, the buds would bloom in to wide soft velvetty white flowers,.. My kids enjoy seeing the buds blooming into flowers. It is amazing! This whole process takes less than 3 minutes! And they last the whole night. and when the sun's first drop of light falls on the flower, it 's life gets over. Thanks so sowmya.. my neighbor, I got this wonderful creeper. When you get the seeds of this creeper,.. please don' t put them in soil right away. soak them in water at least three days before you sow these seeds for the best results.

Our builders left this yellow flower creeper, It covers our car port and every morning, gives us rain of yellow flowers, Amazing creeper.

Button roses - Pink and White
These are very similar to pink button roses but they have tinge of white, so are little different.

Each time, the plant blooms, it give me 60+ flowers at a time..
Pink button roses..
Among the button roses..this one is the queen, king being the yellow button rose. Today I don't have the fresh yellow button roses. When I have, I will upload the sharp little cousins of these pink roses.

These are little orange beauties.. I could n't take a good picture, as I am not a professional photographer. I thought they looked better outside.
Multi colored mini rose
This flower in the picture has passed it's fully bloomed state.
Star like white button roses
These button roses come in abundance and are very small in size. If kept next to the mogras, sometimes mogras in my garden have bigger size. They remind me of stars in night. My daughers admire roses. This one is for them. I got this plant last year from road side nursery on sarjapur road,bangalore.
Jasmins/sannajaji
In mogra/jasmin family,.. this flowers throughout the year and easiest to survive and needs least maintenance.

These mogras are tripple layered flowers. I will post the pictures of fully bloomed mogras in next summer
Green sampenga
I got this plant from simhachalam near vishakhapatnam. Sampenga flowers have strong smell, spreading around, attracting snakes.. This one comes in three different colors, green, mustard and white. My personal favourite has been mustard flower. I don' t have big yard space for the tree to grow. So I got this hybrid green one. A visitor to the home told me about white sampengas seen in mysore. I have n't seen them yet.

I saw table roses in only 2 colors. May be they are available in other colors too.

We can see these flowers in yellow,orange,red, purpule and other shades in pink,orange and red. Grows both indoors and outdoors.My mother got 5 different shades in her garden. She planted saplings of all colors in my garden too.

this creeper has lovely leaves and small bright red flowers. My mother got it from hyderabad and planted it near roses, making it creep all over the rose plants.

Seasonal and.. once you plant in your home, they are there forever. Come in half a dozen colors.. My favourite is purple.
Some wild orange flower..
This plant was there in lawn, when we moved in. I just left it there for the summer,thinking let this summer pass..and we will see what to do about this one. But these delicate beautiful flowers are admired by my family. My mother took the plant sapling to her garden and is waiting for the flowers
kanakaambaram flowers
kanakaambara flowers are light weight flowers available in at least 3-4 colors. Most common color being Orange/kaashaayam. I have three varieties at home. (Orange, yellow and lady kanakaambarams).

purple beauties..
I saw maroon flowers like these in my neighbor's home and was very impressed and thought I should also get those. I went to the nurseries on sajjapur road, (bangalore) and on road side, I found the same flower but in different colors, They were all potted and sold for 30Rs a pot. I found this pot having purple, white and and pale pink flowers in the same pot. Three colors in one shot!! Was happy and brought this home. It is seasonal and the flowers last at least 10 days, the shade of the flower indicating the age.. Dried flowers fall and new plants come once the plant dries off and we are ready for the next season!

I got this plant in Nov, 2007. and to this day, this plant always has at least 10 bunches on it. Each bunch has purple and white flowers..

Red idly flowers are everybody' s favourite. I get all my visitors stop for an extra minute to check these flowers out. And the yellow flowers are liked by Lord shiva. I will soon update the names of the flowers. What a shame, I don't even know the names of most of the flowers I grow at home!

These flowers have this purity,.associated with turmeric....
White wild hibiscus
This is one of the most common varieties of hibiscus available in india. The plant blooms throughout the year and it grows over 20 ft, if left un monitered. I got this plant from a vendor on old madras road, on road side. People said,.. it is such a common variety. You have such a small front yard..Why waste? But somehow I got this thing for white hibiscus since childhood. I don' t feel like trimming it yet. Currently I am enjoying the dozens of flowers every day.
Orange full hibiscus
I have this hybrid hibiscus plant which gives white single layered flowers on one branch and light orange colored full hibiscus flowers on another one. White single layered flowers are more in number and those branches grow much faster than their sibling branches which come out slower. The white flowered branches grew to be over 12 feet in an year. I got this plant from old madras road, Bangalore. Those road side plant dwellers...

This plant grows very very slow. In full year it grew just a few inches. The flowers are very delicate and they last one day.

Serpant' s tongue..
This flower is one of the toughest plant. You can uproot this plant and throw in the sun, in summer for 3 days and plant it back, still it survives. My daughter Dhatri got it from her friends' home. Frankly.. I was n' t too interested to keep this plant in my home. But I did n't want to say no to my little one. So, kept it. But now.. I enjoy the flowers. These flowers just spread sideways making it difficult for the other plants to survive. One needs to control the growth of these plants, to let other plants live :-)

I got the seeds from madiwala market and sowed them last year. Meanwhile, my mother got some saplings from her garden. I have these beautiful shiny eggplants in three different colors..

This creeper in my home has some history associated with it. My grandfather (who died like 15 years back) had this creeper in his house (Rangapuram village). My mother got sapling from the same creeper and grew it in her garden for years. When my backyard was ready for some plants, my mother gave a piece of the creeper (without roots!) and for days together,... I was too busy to even plant it. It was there in my baggage and only in weekend, I remembered and ran and planted it. For weeks together there were no leaves on it, I frankly thought, it died, and when I was not really looking for it, it started turning green and today I have a pound of these vegetables every week. My parents built the support when they came for a visit during the summer..

Again, my mother gave me 10 chilly plant saplings from her garden last july. And each plant gave more than 100 chillies. Amazing chillies.
Sem/country beans/chikkuDu/aval
My mother got this creeper from her garden, it crawls on fence separating our home from our neighbors. Gives very yummy beans. We cook either with ginger and chiilies or with eggplants.
Alachandalu/Wild beans/lobya
My driver is from Kolar district. Their family is in to vegetable farming. He got these seeds from me last year. He promised me that, alachandalu would be a bush, but it creeps on banana plant and gives very tender, yummy beans. My daughter loves to peel and eat the seeds direct from plant., although we can fry them with onions, she never gives me chance :-)
BhinDi/okra/lady's finger/benDakaaya
What can I say about this vegetable? All the indian children I know, love this vegetable. (fried ofcourse :-) ) I sowed the seeds given by my driver from kolar,Karnataka

This plant came on it' s own in my garden. May be from our neighbors.. Gives healthy and tasty fruit.
guova/jaama kaaya
I got this plant from Mysore. A huge nursery on highway.an year back, According to the nursery owner, this is called 'one kilogram guova'. He told me that this plant would start yielding in an year. It is exactly an year since we got this plant. It grew to be 12 ft tree in just one year, and has around half a dozen fruits. I am waitng to check the weight of the fruit. :-)
Curry leaves..
No traditional south indian meal is complete without a leaf or two of curry leaves, slashed in to the seasoning. The ancestors of this plant are from my ancestors garden. :-) My grandpa's plant's children made it to my mother's garden and I have their grandchildren.. My mother gave me this plant last summer. Very slow to grow.. but nicest of flavours..

most widely available green in andhra pradesh,India, again as in other greens, iron content is high.
Arvi/Taro/chEma root
Arvi root is very tasty vegetable growing under ground. The leaves are also edible. Any shredded vegetable could be wrapped in taro leaves and shall fried for yummy veggie rolls. These leaves became gigantic, usually they are small, hardly 1/2 sq ft. When the leaves dry off, we can dig the ground and cook the root.
bacchali/indian spinach..
Bacchali was once regarded by common man as the boring cheap leaf, poor peple ate.. But Ayurveda always had high regard for this leaf. It has high levels of iron, has medicinal values associated with it. I myself have seen at least 4-5 varieties of bacchali. ** I think ** that the creeper with deep purple stem should be richest in iron content. In this picture, there are two creepers. one with thick,dark green leaf and another with pale green delicate leaf. I know one more kind which is a small bush (cylone bacchali) and purple stemmed bacchali.

adds flavour to tea,soups etc.
ajwan/vaamu/indian celery and krishna tulasi
Ajwan herb (both in seeds and leaf form) is used widely for colds and coughs and digestion issues. Krishna tulasi has lot of medicinal value in ayurveda.
